The Co-operative Group and Manhattan Associates Take Industry Honor at Retail Week Supply Chain Awards

The Co-operative Group and Manhattan Associates (Nasdaq:MANH) have won the 'Supply Chain Project of the Year' award at the Retail Week Supply Chain Awards 2011. The announcement was made at an awards dinner hosted by Retail Week on Sept. 7 at the Grosvenor House Hotel, London. More than 400 of the UK's top retailers attended the inaugural industry event.
The Co-operative Group and Manhattan Associates won the award for the work jointly undertaken in successfully integrating the supply chain of Somerfield -- the substantial food retail business acquired by The Co-operative Group in 2009 - and for the transformation of the food retailer's Lea Green distribution center (DC) in St Helens, in the north-west of England.
A redesigned DC network was a key component of the integration effort with solution components from the Manhattan SCOPE supply chain platform supporting the revamped multi-temperature distribution network.
The Manhattan systems were directly responsible for driving an eight percent productivity uplift in The Co-operative Group's DCs, creating a more effective workforce and helping drive down the overall cost of distribution for the group. These benefits were delivered very quickly during the implementation thanks to the quality of time invested in training, both from a systems and process perspective.
The Manhattan systems also helped increase availability of products in stores. The adoption of the Manhattan technology and a voice-directed picking approach in the warehouse significantly reduced cross picks & non-picked lines in store orders. As a result store claims have fallen by more than two thirds.
In addition, a new Manhattan-run distribution centre in St Helens, which replaced four legacy DCs, now provides over 650 stores with an improved service level and has delivered significant savings in running costs (circa POUND9m) for the Co-operative Group.
